Job description

As part of the Joint Action on Personalised Cancer Medicine (JA PCM), the CAYOPI – Children, Adolescents and Young Adults unit of the Sciensano Cancer Centre is looking for a Master’s student to contribute to a project on personalised cancer prevention and early detection based on individual cancer risk in Europe.
The project, which is part of Work Package 5 of the JA PCM, aims to better understand how personalised prevention based on individual cancer risk can be implemented in European health systems, with a particular focus on genetic risk assessment, prevention and early detection.
The project will explore the pathway from risk assessment to personalised prevention, taking into account the perspectives of healthcare professionals, patients and citizens, health-system organisations, policymakers and other stakeholders.
The internship will take place within the CAYOPI unit of the Sciensano Cancer Centre, which focuses on cancer in children, adolescents and young adults, with expertise including omics and oncogenetics. The project may form the basis of a Master’s thesis and will provide experience in oncogenetics, cancer prevention, epidemiology, public health and health-system research.

Like what you are reading? Great! Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting literature reviews on personalised cancer prevention, genetic predisposition, genetic risk assessment, polygenic risk scores (PRS) and early detection;
- Contributing to the assessment of the capacity of European health systems to implement risk-based personalised prevention;
- Developing and/or analysing surveys through REDCap and performing quantitative analyses of the collected data;
- Where appropriate, contributing to interviews with key stakeholders and their analysis;
- Integrating quantitative and qualitative findings to identify barriers, facilitators and requirements for implementing personalised cancer prevention in Europe.
The precise scope of the project will be defined together with the student, depending on their background, interests and the progress of the ongoing projects.
Profile
Your profile :
Degree: Master’s student in Health Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health or a related university programme, with an interest in health research and the implementation of innovations in healthcare.
General skills:
- Good analytical and critical-thinking skills;
- Rigour and attention to detail;
- Ability to search, analyse and interpret scientific literature;
- Interest in both quantitative and qualitative research methods;
- Ability to work independently and in a structured manner;
- Excellent communication and scientific writing skills.
Technical skills:
- Interest in or knowledge of Implementation Science and health-system research;
- Knowledge of oncogenetics, cancer predisposition or polygenic risk scores is an advantage;
- Experience with statistical analysis is an advantage.
Language skills:
- Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
