We are currently looking for a final-year Bachelor's or Master's student to join the Data Office team.
The Data Office aims to ensure that all data relevant to research, surveillance and decision-making within Sciensano are collected, managed and made available efficiently, reliably and with a high level of quality for storage, analysis, dissemination and reuse, while complying with the highest standards of security, compliance and ethics.
As a scientific institute, Sciensano manages a large volume of data generated through research, surveillance, laboratory activities and public health services. Effective data governance and a mature data management approach are essential to ensure the quality, availability, security and reusability of these data.
The Quantum Label provides a framework for assessing the maturity of organisations and services across various dimensions. Applying this framework to Sciensano's data-related activities enables an objective assessment of the current level of maturity and the identification of opportunities for improvement.
This assignment aims to assess the maturity of data governance and data management across different Sciensano services using the Quantum Label. In addition, the assignment includes evaluating the maturity label within the Quantum project.
The results of this project will contribute to:
- providing a better understanding of the organisation's current level of data maturity;
- identifying strengths, risks and areas for improvement;
- formulating recommendations for a future-oriented data governance strategy;
- evaluating the suitability of the Quantum Label as a tool for data governance assessments.

- Identify and contact participants within the selected scientific services for the maturity assessment.
- Assess the data maturity of several scientific services using the maturity assessment framework.
- Collaborate with Data Stewards to characterise a limited number of datasets according to the Quantum Label as part of a pilot project.
- Compare and evaluate the assessment results across the organisation.
- Evaluate the maturity label within the Quantum project.
- Prepare a report summarising the findings and providing recommendations.
Profile
Your Profile :
Degree : You are a final-year Bachelor's or Master's student in Information Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Health Sciences, Computer Science, Library and Information Science, Public Administration, or a related discipline with an interest in data governance, metadata management, and research data, as well as an affinity for the scientific or public sector.
General Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
- Strong communication skills, including conducting interviews and engaging with stakeholders.
- Proactive attitude and ability to work independently.
- Well-organised, accurate and detail-oriented.
- Strong analytical skills and an interest in organisational challenges.
- Eagerness to learn and a genuine interest in data and information management.
- Excellent written communication skills for documentation and reporting.
Technical Skills
- Interest in data governance, data management and information management.
- Ability to structure, analyse and synthesise complex information.
- Knowledge of and interest in the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable).
- Interest in health data, scientific research or public health.
Language Skills
- A good active command of English is essential.
- Basic knowledge of French and/or Dutch.
