In April 2025, the Basel Institute on Governance, the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) International, TRAFFIC and Transparency International joined together to form a partnership to pursue efforts tackling forest corruption, submitting a concept note under the Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI). The consortium together has submitted a grant proposal in September 2025 for a grant to begin in June 2026 and continue through 2028. It posits a focus on impeding corruption that drives forest-related crime through three interconnected workstreams:
Empowering governments, businesses, and civil society in Indonesia and Peru to tackle forestry-related corruption;
Deriving learning on what works, generating evidence and easy-to-use tools and scaling engagements to our global networks and NICFI grantees; and
Multiplying the impacts of our efforts through global advocacy that respond to emerging opportunities across boundaries and supply chains.
Fundamental to and cutting across these workstreams is the Countering Environmental Corruption Practitioners Forum. This virtual network was launched in December 2022 at the International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) in Washington DC, with the aim of advancing programmatic approaches to prevent and address corruption that harms the natural environment and the people who live near and rely on natural resources. Founded by the four consortium partners (Basel, TRAFFIC, TI and WWF), the ‘Forum’ brings together a virtual community of over 800 members from the anti-corruption and conservation communities and:
Supports the exchange of knowledge and evidence
Facilitates discussion and partnerships to identify opportunities for collective action
Creates space to deepen and scale existing practice through collaboration and exchange
Surfaces and synthesizes learning, experiences, and priorities for advocacy and policy forums
Under the NICFI project in particular, a consultant is sought to be hosted by WWF International, but to work across the consortium to support deliverables of this Forum across the three workstreams of the NICFI proposal.
